What are Sustainable Development Goals and how we made a game about it ?

• In 2015, the 193 UN member countries agreed on 17 global goals to reach in 2030 to ensure a future for our planet.​​

• Among these objectives: the fight against poverty and global warming, the absence - once and for all - of hunger in the world, gender equality, sustainable and healthy economic growth, etc...

• These objectives, the "Sustainable Development Goals" (SDG), are particularly ambitious and require not only the mobilization of states but also that of multinationals and civil societies (including NGOs)

• In order to ensure the success of this mobilization, especially with companies, the success of SDGs must be the concern of all. Governments, companies and NGOs will only react if they are expected on the subject. But 2 years after this initiative, only 5% of the OECD population has heard about SDGs …

• We think that Video Games can contribute to the building. Our project aims to make SDGs known through a mobile game, in order to reach a maximum of people. Through a game offering to put themselves in the skin of the main actors of the SDGs, the player fights for a sustainable future on a small planet similar to the Earth.

MAIN SYSTEM OF THE GAME : How the game works.

To win the game, players have to take of 4 variables : The Victory condictions. State of forests, Planet cleanliness, NPC mood, Economy.

 

The 4 variables follow an entire System design :

Player actions -> Activities Actions -> Victory conditions variables -> State of Planet

The player must solve crises to change the planet. But it evolves itself thanks to a System. If the player does not do anything, the planet dies with time. Example: the trees disappear.

MAIN SYSTEM OF THE GAME : 3 differents gameplay to solve a crisis

Players actions have consequences on Activities action. To solve a crisis, player need to follow a serie of actions. Here an example :

  • NGO = information about Wind Turbine and how to save forest

  • Entrepreneur = Transform Iron into Wine Turbine

  • Government = Find and Transfer 6M to the Coal Power Plan to turn it into Renewable Power plant.

The whole system of the game follows a loop. The actions of the player are the crisis resolutions.

  • NGO = information

  • Entrepreneur = Transformation and giving object

  • Government = Transfer money

MAIN SYSTEM OF THE GAME : mathematical system for the game to live on its own

  • The state of the planet depends on the state of the Activities. Activities variables evolve every minutes and they are link to the 4 Victory conditions with the 4 equations on the left picture.

  • Solve a crisis, example turn a Coal Power plant into a Renewable Power plant or a Cars company into an Electric cars company change the equation to the 4 variables (4 victory conditions).

  • To make the planet evolve and give a good feedback to the player and force him to solve crises, every 4 variables are link each other. So player shouldn't focus on one Victory condition.

  • Finally, to give a feedback for the player about a good or bad action, every 4 variables has different state.

  • For example, if the variable of "State of forest" is equal to 0, 50% of the planet have forest. If it's more or equal to 1, 75% of the planet have forest.

Good or Bad actions, prioritize or try to solve everything​, everything depends on player. Everything is design to teach Sustainable Development Goals to people!
